MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton is now a 3-time world champion as she claimed the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight belt on Wednesday in Canada (Thursday in Manila).
Julaton overcame Mexican Maria Elena Villalobos via split decision at “Rumble at the Rama XII” at the Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada.
The scores were 94-97 for Villalobos and 96-94 and 96-94 in favor of Julaton, a former WBO and International Boxing Association (IBA) champion.
According to FightFan.com, the Fil-Am scored a hard-fought triumph in her 10-round match.
“This is a great boxing town for female fighting. I’ve got to give it up to Villalobos… She’s very tough,” Julaton commented.
Acclaimed trainer Freddie Roach, who also coaches Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Gerry Peñalosa, praised his female ward.
“Ana looked good but we’re about half way there… We’ll keep at it and Ana will get even better,” said Roach.
The FightFan.com report noted that Julaton was off to a good start until Villalobos picked up the pace in Round 3. The Fil-Am then reasserted herself in Round 5 while the Mexican bounced back in Round 8.
“The fighters both went toe-to-toe in Round 10 and fought hard to the bell,” wrote Ivan Montiel of FightFan.com.
Julaton now has 7 wins (with 1 knockout), 2 losses and 1 draw while Villalobos has 6 wins (with 3 KOs) and 4 losses.
