RP's Under 18 Beats Myanmar

Nokia-Pilipinas notched its second straight win by clobbering the host nation, 108-39, in the SEABA Under 18 championship on Tuesday at the Thuwunna National Stadium here. The Nationals never really encountered much opposition as they ran rings around the hapless local players whose infancy in the sport was made very obvious by their failure to check the Filipinos' unrelenting full court press. As in their 87-59 win over Malaysia on opening day last Monday, practically everybody in coach Eric Altamirano's 12-man rotation scored, with 6-foot-6 Jethroy Rosario, a TIP standout, leading with 20 points and seven rebounds. "The boys were both physically and mentally prepared, and they are very focused," said Altamirano, who spent the entire game seemingly watching what looked like a mere workout for his boys in preparation for tougher game today against Singapore. The Singapore is one of the three threats to Nokia-Pilipinas' campaign in this tournament serving as qualifier for the Fiba Asia Under 18 in Yemen this September, the two others being Thailand and Malaysia.

Bustamante Wins World 9-Ball

Francisco “Django” Bustamante reigned supreme in the 2010 World Pool Championships (World 9-Ball), defeating Taiwanese “The Little" Monster” Kuo Po-cheng, 13-7, in the final.

Sa wakas nakumpleto na din ang pagiging bilyarista natin. Lahat kasi ito ang pangarap maging WPA World 9-ball champion,” Bustamante said after winning his match at the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation hall in Doha, Qatar early Tuesday morning (Manila time).

Salamat sa Diyos ito na lang ang missing sa career ni Django,” said Philippine Billiards godather Aristeo “Putch” Puyat of Puyat Sports, a long-time benefactor of Bustamante.

On the way to the final, Bustamante beat compatriot Antonio “Nickoy” Lining, 11-5, in the semifinal round to arrange a titular showdown with Kuo who edged Johnny Archer of the United States, 11-10.
Bustamante took the top prize of $36,000, Kuo settled for $18,000 while Lining and Archer got $10,000 each.

The WPA World 9-Ball was Bustamante’s 4th championship this year after previously being a member of the winning Team Asia that routed Team Europe last January 17 in the Asia vs Europe Challenge Match.

He defeated Puyat Sports stable mate Reyes to win the 23rd Annual Japan Open — Open Division in March and took home the inaugural World Professional Billiard League (WPBL) championship in Winnipeg Canada in June.

2002 heartbreak
The World Pool title seemed to be elusive for the Tarlac City native Bustamante.
Although he made it to the World Pool Championships final in 2002 in Cardiff, Wales, he was unsuccessful against American Earl “The Pearl” Strickland.

At the height of the tournament, Bustamante received a shocking phone call from his wife informing him that his daughter, who was less than a year old, had died.

Bustamante strongly considered forfeiting his participation, but his wife somehow convinced him that their child would have wanted him to continue to fight.

In the final, Bustamante was leading Strickland, 15-13, but the American went through with a 17-15 victory. – With reports from Ronnie Nathanielsz, PhilBoxing.com and Marlon Bernardino

Last 64 On World 9 Ball

MANILA, Philippines – Former World No. 1 Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Allan “Surigao” Cuartero beat their respective foes to advance into the Round-of-64 of the 2010 WPA World Pool Championships (World 9-Ball) at the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation hall in Doha, Qatar late Thursday.

Bustamante took on Tohru Kuribayashi of Japan, scoring 9-6 to advance his quest for his first World 9-ball title.

Ang hirap at hindi rin madali ‘tong panalong ito, dahil magaling din ‘yong nakalaban ko. Medyo maganda lang ang itinira ko, at gustung-gusto ko talagang manalo dito kasi lahat naman ay pangarap maging World 9-ball champion," said Bustamante who broke the 6-all tie in the 12th rack after clustering 3 straight racks for the win.

Middle East-based pool instructor Cuartero, meanwhile, utilized his experience in bringing down billiards heavyweight Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, 9-7, keeping him on track for the coveted title.

"Buti nakalamang agad tayo kay (Niels) Feijen," said Cuartero, who raced to a 7-4 commanding lead before securing the win.

Bustamante earlier toppled Fabio Petroni of Italy, 9-7, in the 1st round while Cuartero subdued Chan Keng Kwang of Singapore, 9-7, in his opening match.

Also securing a seat in the Last 64 is Ibrahim Bin Amir, a native of Mindanao who migrated to Malaysia. He scored his 2nd straight win against Mariusz Skoneczny of Poland, 9-5. He earlier beat Bruno Muratore of Italy, 9-7.

Joven Alba, conqueror of Marlon Manalo's in the first round failed to continue his winning streak after yielding to Scott Higgins of Great Britain, 9-4. His next round match against Kenny Kwok of Hongkong.

Female Fil-Am Wins WBO Super Bantamweight

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton is now a 3-time world champion as she claimed the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight belt on Wednesday in Canada (Thursday in Manila).

Julaton overcame Mexican Maria Elena Villalobos via split decision at “Rumble at the Rama XII” at the Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada.

The scores were 94-97 for Villalobos and 96-94 and 96-94 in favor of Julaton, a former WBO and International Boxing Association (IBA) champion.

According to FightFan.com, the Fil-Am scored a hard-fought triumph in her 10-round match.
This is a great boxing town for female fighting. I’ve got to give it up to Villalobos… She’s very tough,” Julaton commented.

Acclaimed trainer Freddie Roach, who also coaches Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Gerry Peñalosa, praised his female ward.

Ana looked good but we’re about half way there… We’ll keep at it and Ana will get even better,” said Roach.

The FightFan.com report noted that Julaton was off to a good start until Villalobos picked up the pace in Round 3. The Fil-Am then reasserted herself in Round 5 while the Mexican bounced back in Round 8.
The fighters both went toe-to-toe in Round 10 and fought hard to the bell,” wrote Ivan Montiel of FightFan.com.

Julaton now has 7 wins (with 1 knockout), 2 losses and 1 draw while Villalobos has 6 wins (with 3 KOs) and 4 losses.
